Highly detailed 1/144 scale assembly model kit of the famous German U-Boat (Unterseeboot or Undersea Boat) , a military submarine operated by the German Navy in World War I and World War II. U-boats were highly successful in destroying Allied supply and merchant shipping in both world wars, and it wasn't until the Allies adopted the convoy system in World War II, in which merchant ships were grouped together and protected by a screen of escort vessels, that U-Boat menace was finally tamed. The German Kriegsmarine (War Navy) further developed U-Boats in the Second World War, leading to a new generation of more technologically advanced U-Boats such as the revolutionary Type XXIII elektroboats (electric boat) , the first submarines designed to operate entirely submerged, rather than as submersibles that could submerge as a temporary means to escape detection or launch an attack.
